HISTORY
How we formed and where we receive support
Overview
In September 2017, the chEDC held its inaugural event: The 1st Annual Equity & Diversity Orientation, a workshop designed to introduce basic concepts in social equity in a manner appealing and accessible to Engineering graduate students, postdocs, professors, and staff. Since then, we've grown and evolved to a Faculty-wide team, officially re-branding as the Graduate Engineering Equity Committee (GEEC) in 2019. We've organised activities ranging from discussion groups and workshops to photo contests, picnics, and de-stress initiatives. Click here to check out some of our past educational events!
In addition to promoting social education, awareness, and community building, GEEC is also involved in reviewing accessibility, education infrastructure, initiatives, and policies within the Faculty of Engineering. You can find information and documents related to infrastructure here.
Our initiative was first conceptualised as the Chemical Engineering Equity & Diversity Committee (chEDC) in 2016. The original team was assembled in 2017 by a group of McGill University graduate students motivated to create spaces where they could explore topics related to social equity, diversity, and inclusion. In particular, they aimed to shed light on the experiences of master's students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows---a population often overlooked when it comes to social support, resource referral, and community building. The team was officially recognised as a Chemical Engineering departmental committee in November 2017.
