GEEC Receives Award for Equity & Community Building + Preston Phipps Equity & Diversity Award!

Updated: May 20, 2020

The Graduate Engineering Equity Committee (GEEC) has been selected as the recipient of two prestigious awards this year: McGill's Award for Equity and Community Building (Team Category) and the Preston Phipps Equity and Diversity Award!

Since 2013, the annual Award for Equity and Community Building has recognised the efforts of individuals and teams at McGill dedicated to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and community engagement. Similarly, the Preston Phipps Equity and Diversity Award recognises student leadership and commitment to EDI initiatives within McGill's Faculty of Engineering.

This was GEEC's third consecutive nomination for the Award for Equity and Community Building and first nomination for the Preston Phipps Equity and Diversity Award. We're overwhelmed with the outpouring of enthusiastic support from our students, staff, and professors both within and outside the Faculty of Engineering. A huge thank-you to all our past and present GEEC members, event participants, collaborators, sponsors, and advisors who have been contributing to the success of our initiative since 2017.

Congratulations also to Elena Lin, who was selected as the recipient of the Award for Equity and Community Building in the Student category! Elena is both co-director of the McGill Student Chapter of Scientista and co-founder of the SciComm Collective, two amazing organisations promoting EDI and empowering underrepresented groups in STEM. Please check them out! You can read the McGill Reporter's interview with both Elena and GEEC here.

UPDATE: GEEC was selected as one of McGill's finalists for the Forces AVENIR award in the Society, Communications, and Education category! Forces AVENIR recognises students across the province of Québec who are leading initiatives that benefit their community.

Here's to another year of incredible student-powered change as we continue fostering a healthier, more equitable, and more sustainable campus environment.

Stay safe and be kind to yourselves!

Sincerely,

Your Graduate Engineering Equity Committee
