An introduction to basic concepts in social equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) explored through real-world examples, studies, and interactive activities. This workshop is designed with a focus on the culture in academia and Engineering both broadly and at McGill University.

Active Listening Workshop

An instructional and interactive workshop where attendees learned skills for listening to understand and support others in both their professional and personal life. This event was led by the Community Outreach Coordinator of the Peer Support Center, Laura Yudo.

CHEE687 Guest Seminar: Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and You!

A guest seminar given in a graduate-level Chemical Engineering course: Research Skills & Ethics. We introduce concepts of social equity, diversity, and inclusion and their relevance to the various roles undertaken by graduate students---researcher, mentor, teaching assistant, author, etc. This workshop focuses on providing new graduate students with the opportunity to reflect on the relevance of EDI to their experiences as graduate students and ways to foster an inclusive environment in their future interactions.

Planning Inclusive Virtual Events Workshop

What do inclusion and accessibility look like when your event is held over Zoom? This informal workshop was held by GEEC to discuss how to encourage participation from everyone when organizing virtual events and reflect on our experiences attending and hosting virtual events throughout 2020! We examined strategies to manage accessibility concerns, improve communication, and foster community in student-led events and meetings.

Action x Design with E-IDEA

As part of an ongoing collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering, GEEC partnered with the E-IDEA initiative to present Action x Design with E-IDEA: Approach Your Work with Purpose. In this interactive workshop, we explored ways to approach our goals with thoughtful design to better match our values with our actions. We discussed how the Faculty of Engineering has shaped their Community Outreach programming, and looked at ways to elevate our actions through intentional processes.

Responding to Disclosures
Date: March 30th, 2021

In this interactive workshop, we learned how to respond when someone discloses a traumatic experience, with particular attention to the wide-ranging forms that sexual violence can take. We practiced techniques to actively listen to a discloser and discussed the resources that McGill can offer to survivors of harassment. This event was led by Bianca Tétrault of McGill's Office for Sexual Violence Response, Support, and Education.

Summer Rally

This event focused on fostering a sense of community in the graduate student community and promoting the wellbeing of the graduate students. Participants teamed up in groups to complete suggested activities from a list to gain points and the chance to win prizes.
